The National Assembly saw five seats up for grabs
The by-elections, which were held across several constituencies of Pakistan, were a test of the ruling coalition’s hold on power and public support. The National Assembly saw five seats up for grabs, with PML-N claiming two, while the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Sunni Ittehad Council each won one seat. The NA-8 Bajaur seat witnessed an independent candidate, Mubarak Zeb, emerging victorious.
In a notable win, Ali Pervaiz from PML-N retained the National Assembly seat NA-119, previously vacated by Maryam Nawaz, the Chief Minister of Punjab. All 338 polling stations in the constituency reported a win for Ali Pervaiz. Similarly, PML-N’s candidate Malik Rashid succeeded in Kasur.
In Sindh, the PPP successfully retained its seat in the National Assembly from Qambar Shahdadkot.
By-elections for the provincial assemblies
The by-elections for the provincial assemblies reflected a heavy tilt towards PML-N in Punjab, where the party won ten out of twelve seats. The allied parties, Pakistan Muslim League Quaid (PML-Q) and Tehreek-e-Istehkam Pakistan (TIP), each secured a seat as well.
Former Chief Minister Punjab, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, faced an unexpected defeat in Gujrat, signaling a major political shift in the region.
In another significant contest, the PML-N candidate Adnan Afzal Chatha seized the seat vacated by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Ahmad Chattha.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the unofficial and provisional results showed that Sunni Ittehad Council’s candidate, Dawood Shah, won the PK-91 Kohat 2 constituency with a total of 22,998 votes.
The early results from the Balochistan Assembly indicated that PML-N’s candidate Muhammad Zarin Khan Magsi triumphed over the independent candidate Shah Nawaz Hasan in PB-22 Lasbela. The Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) and Balochistan National Party (BNP) are reportedly leading in Qilla Abdullah and Khuzdar constituencies, respectively.
